Russell's Syndrome (not related to Silver Russell Syndrome) is also know as Diencephalic Syndrome. The signs are progressive emaciation (loss of weight) even though there is normal or increased food intake. Often there is a marked increase of a serum growth hormone. Euphoric appearance, exceptional alertness, hypotension (low blood pressure), hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels), ataxia (poor co-ordination and balance symptoms) and optical problems (nystagmus) are common. Onset 3 months to 2 years.It is usually caused by a brain tumour such as a low-grade glioma or astracytoma. Often located in hypothalamic region.
Chemotherapy is often the only form of treatment that can be offered although it cannot cure the disease.
